Jowar semiya chitranna is one of my recent cooking experiments. Do try and let me know your thoughts.
Ingredients
Jowar 1 cup for semiya
For preparing upma
Grated coconut - 5 to 6 spoons
Oil - 3 spoons
Peanuts - 1 fist full
Bengal gram dal - 1 spoon
Mustard seeds - 1/4 spoon for tempering; 1 spoon for masala
Green chillies - 3 o 4
Curry leaves - 4 to 5
Turmeric powder - 1 pinch
Lemon - 1/2 large sized
Salt to taste
Method
Wash and soak jowar for about 8 hours. Drain out the water and grind into fine batter using 2 cups of water. Transfer the contents on to a thick bottomed kadai.
Cook the batter until you can make balls out of it. Prepare mudde / balls and cook them in a steamer.
When the balls are hot prepare semiya using semiya maker (do not switch of the stove with steamer until all semiya has been prepared, if balls are hot its easy to prepare semiya). Using semiya maker stand, its pretty easy to prepare.
Allow the semiya to cool down for about 15 minutes.
Now grind grated coconut, green chillies and a spoon of mustard leaves in a mixer grinder without adding water.
Heat a thick bottomed kadai. Add oil. When oil gets heated up, add peanuts, bengal gram dal, turmeric powder, mustard seeds. When mustard seeds start spattering, add curry leaves. After 10 seconds, add ground masala, ix well and cook for 2 minutes. Switch of the stove and add lemon, salt and mix well.
Now cut the semiya into small pieces using hand. Add the above masala and mix gently.
Yummy and healthy jowar semiya chitranna is ready to serve.
