Chakotha soppina masoppu saru / Mountain spinach mashed sambar

Masoppu means maseda soppu or mashed greens. Saru means Rasam. Masoppu saru is one of the authentic recipe of Karnataka. Chakotha soppu / Mountain spinach is widely available greens in south India. Sharing here with the chakotha soppina masoppu saru recipe for you all to try.

Ingredients

Chakotha soppu - 1 big bunch
Onions - 3 to 4 medium sized
Tomatoes - 3 medium sized
Green chillies - 8 to 10
Garlic cloves - 8 to 10
Yellow moong dal - 1/2 cup / Toor dal - 1/2 cup
Salt to taste

For tempering
Oil - 2 spoons
Mustard seeds - 1/2 spoon
Asafetida - 1 pinch
Red chillies - 1

Method
Finely wash and chop chakotha leaves, onions and tomatoes, green chillies. Remove the skin of garlic cloves.

Wash the moong dal and transfer it to a pressure cooker. Add all the chopped vegetables including garlic. Add 4 cups of water, salt and pressure cook for 3 whistles.

Take about 1/5th of the cooked vegetables from the top of the cooker and grind for 15-20 seconds in a mixer grinder. Add this back to the cooker, mix well and cook it for about 3-4 minutes.

Now heat a tempering vessel. Add oil, mustard seeds, asafoetida and chopped red chillies. When mustard seeds starts spattering, add this to the cooked masoppu saru and mix well. 

You can serve this with rice / ragi mudde.
