ಕಲ್ಲಂಗಡಿ ಹಣ್ಣಿನ ಪಲ್ಯ / Watermelon Curry

Best part about summer is the pleasure of eating watermelons. After taking out ripen portion of water melon, we will be left with light green portion which is between skip and ripen fruit. No need to through away that. You have already seen how to prepare watermelon Dosa using that. Now am sharing the recipe for Palya / Curry. By using this, we generate less garbage too... Please try it out & share your comments.

Ingredients

Water melon - 1 medium sized (approximately 1 kg weight)
Oil - 2 spoons
Bengal gram dal - 1 spoon
Mustard seeds - 1/2 spoon
Turmeric powder - 1 pinch
Green chillies - 4 to 5
Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
Salt to taste
Lemon - 1/2 medium sized
Grated coconut - 3 to 4 spoons

Method
Cut the watermelon into slices. Remove the skin (remover only the hard portion of the skin). Separate out the red portion of the watermelon which we can use it for eating as it is or for preparing juice. Now we are left with light green portion of the watermelon. Finely chop the same.

Heat a thick bottomed kadai. Add oil, bengal gram dal, mustard seeds and turmeric powder. When mustard seeds starts spattering, add green chillies and curry leaves. Cook for 10-15 seconds and add chopped watermelon. Add salt, mix well and close the lid. Allow it cook (without adding oil) in medium flame for about 15-20 minutes. Keep stirring so as to ensure it does not stick to the bottom of the kadai.

Switch of the flame. Add grated coconut and lemon juice and mix well.

This can be served with chapati / rice.

Remove the skin and red fruit portion and use light green
portion of  water melon to prepare the curry
