Spine gourd Chutney / mada hagala kayi gojju / kantola chutney / ili kivi gojju


ಮಾಡ ಹಾಗಲ ಕಾಯಿ (Mada Hagala kayi) also called as ಇಲಿ ಕಿವಿ (Ili Kivi) is called as spine gourd in English. This vegetable was introduced to me by my father in law and he taught me the recipe of Gojju which tastes different and yummy.  Please try it out and let me know.

Ingredients
Spine gourd - 4
Oil - 4 spoons
Urad dal - 3 spoons
Red chillies - 5 to 6
Coconut - 1/2 medium sized
Tamarind - 1/2 small lemon sized
Jaggery - 1 small lemon sized piece (optional)
Salt to taste

Method
Wash and cut the spine gourd in multiple pieces, remove inside portion as shown in picture. Now chop it in to fine pieces.

Heat a thick bottomed Kadai. Add 3 spoons of oil. Add chopped spine gourd and roast it in low flame by stirring it frequently it till turns crispy. Switch off the flame and allow it to cool.

Roast ural dal, red chillies with a spoon of oil and allow it to cool.

Finely grind roasted spine gourd, urad dal, red chillies along with coconut, tamarind, jaggery (optional) and salt. 

Yummy spine gourd chutney is ready to serve along with rice, chapati etc.
