ಕೆಸುವಿನ ದಂಟಿನ ಪಲ್ಯ / ಕೆಸುವಿನ ಕರಗಲಿ / Colocasia stem curry


Colocasia (ಕೆಸು in Kannada) is widely available in India and its leaves, roots and stem are being cooked in different parts of India. Colocasia is helps in 
reducing cancer rate (as per American Journal of Clinical study). My grand ma used to tell me that Colocasia helps in cleaning the kidney.

We can also grow this easily in the pots and does not require much care.

Here is colocasia stem curry recipe (called as ಕೆಸುವಿನ ದಂಟಿನ ಪಲ್ಯ in Malnad region and also called as ಕೆಸುವಿನ ಕರಗಲಿ in Havyaka language). 

Ingredients
Colocasia stem - 1 large bunch
Green Chillies - 6 to 8
Garlic Cloves - 10
Tamarind - 1 medium lemon sized
Salt to taste

For seasoning
Oil - 3 spoons
Urad Dal - 1 spoon
Mustard seeds - 1 spoon
Turmeric powder - 1 pinch

Method
Wash the colocasia stem and remove the outer layer using fingers as shown in the picture.  Now finely chop the stem and also green chillies and garlic cloves separately.

Heat a thick bottomed Kadai. Pour the oil into the Kadai. Add Urad dal and mustard seeds. When mustard seeds starts spattering, add turmeric powder. Now add finely chopped chillies and garlic. Stir the same for 30 seconds. 

Add finely chopped colocasia stem, salt, tamarind juice (soak the tamarind in hot water and squeeze out the juice) and a cup of water. Stir well and cook for about 15 minutes.

Yummy colocasia stem curry is ready to serve with rice.
