Though there are various types of breakfast, I run out of options at times. When I have to prepare, especially, a breakfast on a fasting day, (in our family fasting diet, we do not consume any rice ingredient, and onions and garlic are no, nos) my choices are limited. Here is one such recipe which is a balanced diet.
Ingredients
Daliya / Broken wheat – 1 cupBeetroot – 1 large size
Soaked lentil – 1 cup
Grated coconut – 3 spoons
For tempering
Bengal gram dal – 1 spoon
Mustard seeds – 1 spoon
Turmeric – Very little
Green chillies – 4
Curry leaves – 8 to 10
Lemon – 1/2
Method
In a thick bottomed Kadai, roast the Daliya on a low flame till
you get the aroma. It takes about 8 to 10 minutes (time varies based on the
size of the Kadai, quantity being roasted etc..)Cut the beetroot into small pieces. Chop the green chillies.
Heat the pressure cooker, add oil, bengal gram dal, mustard
seeds and turmeric powder. When mustard seeds starts spattering, add green
chillies and curry leaves. Fry it for a minute.
Now added soaked / sprouted lentil (I have used ಅಲಸಂಡೆ / Black Eyed Beans ,
can use Green Moong dal / Mot / Channa dal / Peanut as well. If you can plan well in
advance, can allow the lentil to sprout). Roast it for 2-3 minutes. Add beetroot and mix it. You can replace beetroot with vegetable of your choice as well. Add 4 cups of water, salt. Now add the roasted Daliya, mix it well and close the cooker lid.
Switch off the stove after 4 whistles.
Finally add grated coconut and lemon juice and mix well. Optionally, you can add one spoon of home made ghee. This will add a nice aroma to the Upma.Key ingredients |
