Last year, I was watching a show called "Family Doctor" in Zee Kannada. During the discussion in the show, one of the doctors stated, "Every vegetable and fruit has its own unique benefits but very often, people stick to a few vegetables". I gave it some thought, and now I think of this every week when I'm shopping for veggies. It is a pleasure to choose different vegetables.
Recently, I spotted fresh breadfruit in the market and was happy to buy it.
Breadfruit (also known as Jigujje/ಜಿಗುಜ್ಜೆ in Kannada) grows in tropical climate. In south India, it is mainly grown in Kerala and costal Karnataka. This is also a type of jackfruit.
Various dishes are made using this. Here is a easy-to-cook curry recipe.
Ingredients
Breadfruit - Half medium sized
Lemon - 1/2 Medium Sized
Grated coconut - 3 Spoons
Salt to taste
For Tempering
Oil - 2 spoons
Urad Dal/ Black gram - 1 spoon
Mustard Seeds - 1 spoon
Asafoetida - 1 gram
Turmeric - 1/4 spoon
Green chilies - 3 to 4
Curry leaves - 5-6
Method
Remove the skin of the Breadfruit and remove the hard inside portion. Now cut it into small pieces.
Heat the thick bottomed Kadai. Now pour the oil, add Urad Dal, Mustard seeds and Asafoetida. As soon as mustard seeds start spattering, add green chillies and curry leaves and saute for 2 minutes.
Now add the cut breadfruit, salt and 1/4 cup of water and cook it in medium flame. Keep stirring so that it does not stick to the bottom of the Kadai. It gets cooked within 10 minutes. Turn off the flame.
Add the grated coconut and lemon juice and mix well.
Yummy Sabji is now ready to serve!
