Cluster beans also called as Chavali Kayi, Gori Kayi in Kannada. It tastes slightly bitter.

Ingredients

Cluster Beans - 1/2 KG
Bengal Gram Dal - 2 big spoons
Urad Dal - 2 big spoons
Red chillies - 4 to 6
Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
Grated Jaggery - 2 spoons (optional, it helps to overcome bitter taste of Cluster beans)
Tamarind - 1 medium lemon sized
Salt to taste

For tempering

Oil - 3 spoons
Urad dal - 2 spoons
Asafoetida for taste
Mustard seeds - 1 spoon
Curry leaves - 10

Method

Wash and finely chop the cluster beans. Heat the oil in a thick bottomed Kadai, add Urad dal, mustard seeds and asafoetida. As mustard starts spattering, add curry leaves, chopped cluster beans, salt & water and cook for about 15 minutes. Alternatively you can cook cluster beans in a pressure cooker along with salt for about one to two whistles and add the cooked cluster beans to the tempering.

Now fry Bengal Gram, Urad Dal and Red chillies together in a Kadai till it turns golden brown. Grind this along with coconut and tamarind into fine paste by adding water.

Add this masala into cooked cluster beans. Add jaggery and boil for about 10 minutes.  The consistency should be pretty thick (thicker than Sambar).
