Seege soppu saru / Shikakai leaves rasam / New mom dish

In malenadu region of Karnataka, seege leaves (shikakai leaves / soap pod leaves) are a must to be included in new mom's diet in the form of saru / rasam (Bananthi adige / bananthi aduge). Thanks to my Amma for carrying the tradition to our generation and helping us passing on to the next generation.

Shikakai leaves contains laxative properties due to which it helps in curing several stomach disorders like constipation, indigestion, stomach cramps, and flatulence. It ensures proper assimilation of food and healthy bowel movement. Since new mom's typically suffer from constipation, shikakai rasam aids to avoid suffering from it.

This herb also acts as a liver stimulant, and can thus facilitate proper bile secretion. Hence, this is an all-natural method to treat jaundice without side effects. This is a natural remedy for malarial fever too.

Ingredients

Shikakai leaves - 8 to 10 small branches (as shown in the photo)
Garlic cloves - 4
Pepper powder - 1/4 spoon
Ghee - 1 spoon
Salt to taste

Method

Remove the thorny stems and separate out the leaves. It's ok to retain very thin stems.

Wash and boil shikakai leaves in 4 cups of water and salt for about 10 minutes. Allow it to cool down. Stain the water and separate out the leaves.

Chop the garlic cloves each into 3 to 4 pieces. Heat a tempering spatula. Add ghee, pepper powder and chopped garlic. Transfer this onto rasam after 10 seconds and mix well.

You can serve this rasam along with rice or can drink as soup.
