Kamarakshi kayi rasa / Star fruit kayi rasa / carambola curry

Star fruit is a sweet and sour fruit. You can either eat it as it is or can cook some dishes and consume. I like to cook kayi rasa of some of the fruits like mango, pineapple etc. I have tried star fruit as well couple of times and liked it. I am sharing the recipe for you to try.

Ingredients

Star fruit - 5
Grated Coconut - 6 to 8 spoons
Bengal gram - 1 spoon
Urad dal - 1 spoon
Sesame seeds - 1 spoon
Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 spoon
Red chillies - 6 to 8
Tamarind - 1 small lemon sized
Jaggery powder - 4 to 5 spoons
Oil - 1 spoon
Salt to taste

For tempering
Oil - 2 spoons
Urad dal - 1/2 spoon
Mustard seeds - 1/2 spoon
Turmeric powder - one pinch

Method
Wash and remove the edges of the star fruit. Chop them into thin slices.

Heat a thick bottomed kadai. Pour the oil. When oil gets heated up, add urad dal, mustard seeds and turmeric powder. When mustard seeds starts spattering, add sliced star fruits. Add salt, mix well and close the lid and cook in medium flame for about 3 to 4 minutes.

Meantime, roast urad dal, bengal gram dal, fenugreek seeds, sesame seeds, red chillies together along with one spoon of oil. Grind the roasted ingredients along with coconut and  tamarind water. Please note that star fruit itself is bit sour, little tamarind is being added to enhance the taste.

Add this masala to the Kadai with cooked star fruit. Add jaggery and cook for about 5 minutes. Keep on stirring once in a while so that it doesn't stick to the bottom of the vessel.

You can serve this with rice, chapati etc.
