Agathi pods curry / Agathikai palya

I am too fond of cooking and eating variety of fruits and vegetables. My eyes gets wider whenever I go around vegetable and fruit shops. This time I was happy to spot this seasonal vegetable Agathikai in the nearby shop. Having cooked agathi leaves curry earlier, I was happy to ask the shop vendor the agathikai curry recipe and cook it. Curry tasted unique and yummy. When you spot this veggie during Jan to March, do try it out.

Ingredients

Agathi pods - 1/2 kg
Onions - 3 to 4
Curry leaves - 5 to 6
Green chillies - 4
Grated coconut - 3 to 4 spoons
Oil - 3 spoons
Bengal gram dal - 2 spoons
Mustard seeds - 1/2 spoon
Turmeric powder - 1 pinch
Lemon - 1/2 medium sized
Salt to taste

Method

Wash and remove both the ends (edges) of agathi pods and finely chop them. Chop the onions, green chillies and curry leaves into fine pieces.

Heat a thick bottomed kadai. Add oil. When oil gets heated, add bengal gram dal, mustard seeds, turmeric powder. When mustard seeds start spattering, add green chillies. Roast it for 10 seconds. Add curry leaves, onions and roast for 30 seconds. Add chopped agathi leaves, add salt, mix well. Close the lid without adding water. Vegetables tastes so good when it gets cooked using the steam which gets generated while cooking. Need to ensure to open the lid and stir the agathi pods often to ensure it doesn't stick to the vessel.

It takes about 15 mins to cook. Switch off the stove. Add grated coconut, lemon juice and mix well.

We can serve this with rice, chapati etc.
